Trinidad & Tobago falls to Peru in the last pool-play match – Volleyball News
Women’s teams from Trinidad & Tobago and Peru crossed their ways in the last pool-play match of the XI Pan American Cup on Monday. Peruvian ladies proved to be better in the game and marched away with 3-0 victory.
They added 25-15, 25-20, and 25-12, in order to clinch success in the match. Carla Rueda charted match –high 13 points, whereas her teammate Clarivett Yllescas was named second best-score with 10 points.
Kelly- Anne Billingy and Rheeza Grant fought for Trinidad & Tobago and added eight points each.
In the opening set of the match, Peru and T&T players contested their skills for about 20 minutes. Mirtha and Elena helped Peru with commanding serves that created a strong impression on the rival side. Trinidad & Tobago trailed behind at the first technical timeout and failed to go up on the scoreboard. Peru led the scores all the way from start to end and secured first frame at 25-15.
Rheeza of Trinidad & Tobago saved crucial points for her team in the second set. She threw her hands up in the air to block the swinging spikes from the opponents and remained quite successful. With better attack and defence, T&T managed to shorten the gap of points, but still dropped the second set.
Peruvian ladies hit the mark in third set and stamped a straight set win over Trinidad & Tobago.
Edwin Jimenez, the winning Coach of Peruvian squad, expressed delight about his team’s success. He disclosed his thoughts after the match in the following manner: “We have a few experimented players and after Karla Ortiz is out, we have given more opportunity to Angela who is one of the youngest players in this roster.”
Likewise, the skipper Elena Keldibekova was more than happy to overcome a physically strong and taller team in the match. She stated that better defence led her team to victory in the match.
Trinidadian Head Coach Francisco Cruz stated: “I cannot say that the players were tired (after the match against Costa Rica). The credit is for the serve strategy by Peru. They also controlled the pass and that really affected our attack.”
The loss in the last match of the tournament moved Trinidad & Tobago to an overall record of 1-4 in the prelims, while Peru closed the first round with 4-1 record. Peruvian ladies will return to action Wednesday in the quarterfinal match against Dominican Republic. Trinidad & Tobago has been moved to the classification round for 7-10 positions.
