Trinidad & Tobago sends Mexico to home loss in the Women’s Pan Am Cup – Volleyball News
Women’s team from Trinidad & Tobago did it wonderfully in their opening match of the XI Pan American Cup on Thursday and held off the hosts Mexico for 3-1 (27-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-19) victory.
Mexican city Ciudad Juarez provided the ground for the third match of Pool B of the XI Pan Am Cup. Home team was equipped with emotional support of local fans, but the ambitious T&T squad did not show any sign of intimidation and defeated the hosts at their
home soil. Trinidadians made a difference in the match with their better attack and solid defence. Mexican team could only secure one frame in the four-set affair and suffered the loss.
Trinidad was led by Kelly-Ann Billingy and Krystele Esdelle. Both of them staged eye-catching action on the net and showcased amazing tactics. Billingy was credited for team-high 17 points, while Esdelle contributed 16 points in the match.
Alejandra Isiordia of Mexico put up a great struggle for her team and registered match-high 27 points. Despite having the top-scorer of the match, Mexican squad dropped the decision.
Opening set of the match was a point-to-point battle. Mexico tried to put pressure on the visitors, but faced a lot of resistance. Trinidad regularly added points and did not allow Mexicans to stretch out the gap of points. The visitors displayed good effort
and secured first set with a slight margin of two points at 27-25.
Raged-up Mexican ladies came from different angles in the following set, but failed to overcome the opponent. Second set also slipped from their hands as T&T posted 25-20 on board.
Mexico finally managed to take third set before Trinidadians closed the affair with better score in the fourth frame.
Trinidad and Tobago’s coach Francisco Cruz was more than happy about his team’s winning performance. He commented after the match in the following manner: “Mexico defends very well and we make many errors but today we played more consistent and the players
kept the focus with the exception of the third set.”
On the other hand, Mexican coach Etanislao Vachino said: “Trinidad & Tobago showed their power and the high blocking. They are one of the tallest team and we couldn’t place our serves the way we wanted.”
Mexico’s Karla Sainz congratulated T&T for victory and hoped to give out a better performance in the upcoming matches of the XI Women’s Pan American Cup. Mexico is scheduled to meet Costa Rica in the next fixture on Friday. Likewise, the Trinidadians will
return to action against Argentina.
