hi i am supposed to be going to trinidad in october with my school i am in year 9 (14yrs old), but now my parents are saying i can't go because they are declaring a state of emergency and there are killings and kidnappings everyday, are they just being over the top as usual or is trinidad as bad as they say it is? anyone that is currently living there would be a great help (i am supposed to be staying in matelot - in a small remote village and we are supposed to be getting to there from the airport by taxi and my parents are saying this is also a big risk. what do you think? x

  1. My friend travels there for work a lot.  He said that there is a lot of violence and kidnappings there daily.  He only goes to certain cities and is VERY cautious about every action there.

It does sound very risky.  I would not go, being as young as you are.

  2. If you look at the "Trinidad & Tobago" board here on Answers, the people there post every day about how bad the crime and poverty are in T&T.  You could go to that board and read some postings, but they are mostly chat-room type postings rather than real travel info postings.  [And most of them are not written in "standard" English, so you may not understand them.]   Still, it gives you an idea of what's going on there, from people who live there and know.

After reading their postings, I would never go there and certainly wouldn't allow my child to go.

  3. Read the Trini newspapers online.  There are murders every night.  Drug abuse is ripping that island country apart.  If you go please be careful.

  4. Well, Trinidad is not a safe place. If you are staying in a big group with some adults it might be ok. Anyway, be careful! And don't go out at night!!! And be careful of the traffic: there are a lot of serios road accidents.

I love Tobago - it's much, much more safe and relaxed. Tobagonians only go to Trinidad when they have to.

  5. buy a Fodor's Guide for Trinidad / Tobago

they have everything & publish new ones yearly

research it online, look up their chamber of commerce for matelot

google maletot & you can find out the situation

i think you should go just stay with a large group & you will be Ok
