Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver defeats Paykan Tehran by 3-2: Club Volleyball
A FIVB Volleyball Men’s Club World Championship match took place on October 10 between Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver and Paykan Tehran from Iran. The five set long match reached its close with Trinity Western finding themselves on the winning end with
by 3-2.
The first set of the match was evenly contested but the Canadian club was able to earn a win. The Iranians bounced back in the second set and equalised the match by winning the frame. The momentum generated by winning the second set also got them the third
but the Canadians were able to get back into the game by securing the fourth set and going on to win the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 18-25, 17-25, 25-18 and 15-6.
The coach of Trinity Western Spartans Vancouver, Ben Josephson, made the following comments after his team had won the match: “I want to thank the Paykan team for this great match. It was tough for them to play three games in a row. Paykan responded very
well after the first set, but our players had a lot of energy left and played with passion. Our block definitely made the difference. Our hands were in the right spot. Later in the game they neutralised our blocks, but after some changes we we're able to win
this match after all.”
The coach of the Iranian club, Peyman Akbari, made the following comments about match at the press conference: “First of all I want to say congratulations to the Canadian team. I feel like I didn't lose the game on court, because I already lost this game
during our training and warm-up.”
The start of the opening set of the game saw the Trinity Western take the lead at 4-2, an advantage  that they were able to extend till 11-6. The Iranians tried to take the lead for themselves but the Canadians prevailed in bagging the first set at 25-23.
The second set saw the Paykan Tehran take the lead early on at 4-2 and extend it at 10-4 but the Canadians closed in the gap at 16-12. Eventually, it was the Iranian club that was able to earn a win at 25-18. Iranians were able to win the third set too but
Trinity Western got hold of the fourth set as well as the fifth at 25-18 and 15-6 respectively.   
The player that was able to score the most points was Rudy Verhoeff who tallied a total of 26 points. On the other hand, the most points scored on the Iranian side was 17, pulled off by Philippe Barca-Cysique.
