Trinniberg back to seven furlongs in the Woody Stephens Stakes
Shivananda Parbhoo owned 3-year-old colt, Trinniberg, who took an unusual route to the Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby by downing a couple of seven furlong races, and then eventually finishing 17th in a 20 horse-field at Churchill Downs on 5 May, 2012.
Trained by Bisnath Parboo, Trinniberg is coming off a 1 ¼ mile event on dirt, and will be cut back in distance for his next start when he participates in the Grade 2, $400,000 Woody Stephens Stakes – exclusive for 3-year-olds.
The seven furlong event on dirt will be held at Belmont Park on 9 June, 2012, and it has reeled in 10 sophomore colts and geldings. Hansen was earlier entered in the Woody Stephens Stakes, but got scratched by his connections.
It doesn’t matter if Hansen is out; the 10 field itself is a handful for Trinniberg, as it also features the Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes winner, Hierro.
However, Trinniberg, prior to the Kentucky Derby mustered up a nice little two race win streak himself over the same distance that Woody Stephens is run on.
Bred in Kentucky by J M Stable, Trinniberg kicked off his 2012 campaign on a winning note, with a victory in the Grade 3 Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park on 10 March, 2012.
At seven furlongs, Trinniberg downed the likes of, Hello Prince, in second and, Ever So Lucky, in third to win it in 1 minute and 21.69 seconds.
Over at the Aqueduct racetrack, Trinniberg flew home to win the Grade 3 Bay Shore Stakes in 1 minute and 23.46 seconds, as Hardened Wildcat and How Do I Win finished second and third, respectively.
“I’m very happy to see him go back to the (seven-furlong) distance,” Parboo told New York Racing Association media officials. “The plan going into the Derby was, when we made it to the quarter pole, if there was no horse left to just ease him up. If he couldn’t finish one-two-three-four, don’t push it. We went into the race hoping he could get the distance, and he could not.
“He came out of the Kentucky Derby even better than he went in, and he’s training really nice.”
