Trinniberg posted a gate to wire victory in the Woody Stephens
Owner Shivananda Parbhoo knew that his 3-year-old sprint sensation, Trinniberg, was the one to beat in the Grade 2, $400,000 Woody Stephens Stakes on 9 June, 2012, at Belmont Park, and that is exactly what the Teuflesberg colt did with a front running effort
to bag the seven furlong test.
In a field of 10 horses, Trinniberg , was sent as the 5 to 2 favourite, and with jockey Willie Martinez, Trinniberg broke swiftly and took the lead quickly with runner, Currency Swap.
The opening fractions were swift as the two battled for the lead until the half mile marker, and in the process covered the opening quarter mile in 22.30 seconds and the half mile in 44.73 seconds.
"There’s nothing more that we can ask for," said Shivananda Parbhoo. "I was expecting: 44 and 1:08. I know this horse is capable of going fast."
On the same day, the connections lost the True North Handicap, as their runner, Giant Ryan under jockey Willie Martinez fractured his front legs sesamoid while vying for the lead in the stretch, as Martinez pulled up in distress and dismounted the sprinter
immediately.
"It’s a bittersweet win," the jockey said. "I have mixed emotions, not to take away from Trinniberg’s performance. It was unbelievable, as we expected him to do. He was pressed today, he handled it well, and we believe he is one of the top sprinters in the
country right now—definitely the best 3-year-old sprinter."
Bred in Kentucky by J M Stable, Trinniberg defeated Currency Swap and Il Villano in second in the stretch, as the two finished second and third, respectively, while the 3-year-old winner topped the seven furlong distance in 1 minute and 22.26 seconds.
Trinniberg, this year has gone on two win three out of four starts this year, and his lone defeat came in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
Going in the Derby on the back of two back to back victories in seven furlong races, Trinniberg’s connections must have been proud with him making Bodemeister carve one of the fastest fractions in the history of the Derby.
