Trinniberg swings the fate of the XpressBet Breeders’ Cup Sprint
Just when the three-year-old colt, Trinniberg, got the chance of his lifetime, he made sure that in the future, he did not regret missing it. The Bisnath Parboo trained won the $1.5 million XpressBet Breeders’ Cup Sprint on 3rd November at Santa
Anita over six furlongs. Racing after losing three races in a row made it easy for the crowds and the audience to ignore the colt.
Racing in the field of fourteen elder horses was an altogether new experience for the three-year-old. It was the first time that he put back the blinkers after the last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Sprint.
Sum Of The Parts turned out to be the pace setter for the race. The jockey, Martinez, saw to it that the pace setter and his own mount raced almost collar to collar. By the time the opening quarter mile went down, Sum Of Parts galloped down the rail.
Within the fraction of a second, Trinniberg necked the leader early in the turn and by the time the pair reached the quarter pole, Teuflesberg’s colt had his jockey riding him away from the shadows of the prior leader.
Just when the success seemed to be approaching, Trinniberg was not really through taking down all the challenges in the field. The Lumber Guy gave his last and final shot at getting the leader out of his way in the stretch. He came up with the plan a little
late as Willie Martinez cruised him on the other end of the wire in 1:07.98 seconds by the margin of ¾ of a length.
“You can dream it, you can feel it, but when you taste it, it’s a totally different thing," Martinez, Trinnibeg's regular rider, said of the Breeders' Cup win. "I never lost confidence in him. He’s been running against the best sprinters all year, I figured
if I was first or second turning for home, he was going to be very tough to beat. This means the world to me.”
“When he turned for home, I felt really good," Pabhoo said. "I added blinkers today because I thought in his last few races he had lost confidence, but we never lost our confidence in him. I knew he would be in front at the eighth pole, and that’s why I
added the blinkers. This is awesome.”
The additional $810,000 took the colt’s until yet career earnings to $1,483,300. An expected victory does not give as much happiness as the one which comes with the unexpected.
