Trinniberg uses Bay Shore Stakes as a prep race for the Kentucky Derby
Trained by Bisnath Parboo for owner Shivananda Parbhoo, the 3-year-old colt Trinniberg has taken an unusual route to the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby, and what’s more surprising is that his connections are clearly not worried about the Derby distance of 1 ¼ miles, as they have pointed their colt for a run in the Grade 3, $250,000 Bay Shore Stakes on 7 April, 2012, which is run over a distance of seven furlongs on dirt, a race that is exclusive for 3-year-old males.
Trinniberg might change the traditional way of following the Derby trail by making the Bay Shore Stakes a steppingstone toward the Kentucky Derby, and a good one if he goes on to win it.
The Kentucky bred son of Teuflesberg, out of mare Bella Dorato by Goldminer’s Gold, Trinniberg has raced only once in the new season, and it was a big race as the colt won the Grade 3 Swale Stakes last out at Gulfstream Park on 10 March, 2012, over a distance of seven furlongs.
He defeated Hello Prince in second and Ever So Lucky in third, while he bagged the race with the winning time of 1 minute and 21.69 seconds.
As a juvenile, Trinniberg participated in three graded stakes race on the trot. Starting with the Grade 2 Saratoga Special where he never founds himself in contention and lost to Union Rags in fifth.
In the Grade 1 Hopeful Stakes second to winner Currency Swap and then second again to winner Vexor in the Grade 2 Nashua Stakes. None of these races exceeded distance more than seven furlongs.
In his juvenile season, and in all his graded stakes races, Trinniberg wore blinkers, but he took them off in the Swale Stakes.
“We knew we needed to take the blinkers off,” said Parbhoo. “We actually knew it at Churchill when he was training for the Breeders’ Cup (seventh in the Juvenile Sprint), but we didn’t want to do it over there. After the Breeders’ Cup, we gave him some time off on the farm, and he’s like a totally different horse now; more relaxed, easy, not headstrong.”
