Trinniberg wins Xpressbet Breeders' Cup Sprint in upset
Proving his doubters wrong, Trinniberg took a shock ¾-length win in the Grade 1, Xpressbet Breeders' Cup Sprint, held at Santa Anita in USA on Saturday, November 3rd.
The bookmakers gave him the low odds of 20 to 1, and it was hard to blame them for that. Trained by Shivananda Parbhoo, the 3-year-old came into the contest after three consecutive losses. But he was really a different animal this time.
Under W. Martinez, he claimed disputed lead on outer early on. Despite being in the front row, Trinniberg had no easy life, as the opponents kept putting pressure on him. Keeping his nerves calm, the dashing runner ran six furlongs in a sharp 1:07.98 on
a fast track.
The American runner travelled nicely in the middle stages, and eventually led over 1f out. He retained his advantage until the finishing line, and took a magnificent victory over The Lumber Guy. Michael Hushion’s runner-up could not match speed of the winner.
It was an awful day for Amazombie, who was carrying the highest price of 4 to 1. Bill Spawr’s trainee was prominent on outer, but could not continue the good work. The favourite runner was outpaced on turn into straight. Failing to show any extra pace in
the final moments, Amazombie finished eighth on the table.
It was Trinniberg’s first Grade One success, which came after a few unlucky rides. Owned by Sherry Parbhoo, the 3-year-old started this season with a couple of fantastic wins, but had been struggling to produce consistent results since then.
“I could almost bet my life he’d be in front at the eighth pole, but from the eighth pole to the wire he’d been losing his focus, so that’s why I decided to put blinkers back on again,” said Parbhoo.
“He ran with blinkers as a 2-year-old, I took them off, and he ran super good without them. But as he got older he got a little smarter and I figured he needed a change to get some of his focus back.  Calder is an amazing track to train on and a big plus
for this horse all year.”
