Trio tie adds excitement to Mayakoba Golf Classic
Till the end of the game on Friday, it was Will Claxton standing as the sole leader at Mayakoba. However, his first round lead was fleetingly existent as he was soon joined by Greg Owen and Daniel Summerhays.
Both of them were able to clinch the top positions with their scores of 67 and 65, respectively.
Owen was able to hit a second straight that helped him secure a 67, whereas Summerhays grabbed the leading position at 8-under 134 in Mexico.
Summerhays’ performance has been a centre of attention for many. With the help of seven birdies and a bogey, he was able to stabilise his position in the event.
"I drove the ball perfectly, pretty much," Summerhays said. "I hit it really solid into the wind. It's a tough driving golf course".
The 28-year-old golfer also said that he is at ease on the El Camaleon course.
He is currently in the learning phase and during this time he needs to spend ample time considering ways through the help of which he can improve his game to the maximum.
Claxton, on the other hand, was able to make his fifth PGA Tour eventful with the help of four birdies and a bogey.
Nevertheless, pundits believe that the golfer from Auburn will definitely face difficulty in maintaining his lead with competitors like Owen and Summerhays strengthening their grip in the competition.
Apart from these two, Owens clinched his score of 67 with the help of five birdies and one bogey.
Former European Tour Champion said that, despite tough conditions on the course, he was able to make an effective score in the event.
He further added, "It's been a bit of wandering around in the wilderness for a couple of years, so it's nice to see play is back and it's nice to see a few putts drop in".
Other than this, Sony Open winner Johnson Wagner still needs to battle a long way to surge his position among the top tier contenders for the championship.
Designer of the course, Greg Norman, also needs to make a full recovery from the shoulder surgery he underwent.
Similar is the case with Mike Weir, who is struggling to make his mark after he missed his cut with an opening at 79.
