  2. I'm not sure exactly what route you're taking, but in northern Chile San Carlos de Atacama is a phenomenal city.  From what I remember it's a bit off of the main highway.  In Peru, Arequipa is one of my favorite cities.  It has a fun nightlife and beautiful old architecture.  Lima is definitely not one of my favorite places to stop, but other people say that they enjoyed it.  I think it's a bit dirty and scary, personally.  I haven't gone any further north than that.  In terms of buses, I took a bunch of different companies, and they are all really similar.  I would suggest upgrading to a "cama" so that you can sleep if you're going to be on the bus for more than 8 hours at a time.  Your seat will fold out entirely so that you can be more comfortable.  Good luck and have fun!
