Question:

Trip or Job Interview - what would you do?

I have a fully paid for vacation package for a trip that I've been planning on taking for months. I am not a rich person and I don't frequently get to go on vacation. The trip is non-refundable.

I have also recently been in the process of trying to get hired at the job that I REALLY want, working for a city in my area. The process for this particular job is long, drawn out, and difficult. I've passed phase one (an exam), and still have multiple phases to go through before potentially being hired (including extensive background checks, psychological examinations, etc).

I just found out that the next phase of getting the job is being held on one of the days that I will be out of town, and that there is no chance that they will re-schedule the interview due to the city budget (unless multiple people can't make the interview). I really, really, really want this job.

So now I have this huge dilemma that I'm stressing like crazy over (which is not typical behavior for me - I'm generally quite calm and make quick, easy decisions). Do I cancel the trip (losing over $800 that I've saved for quite sometime), or do I go to the oral interview - and possibly still not get the job?

I was told that there was a "99% chance" that they will be holding another interview within the next 30-45 days and that I would definitely be invited to go to this interview. They also told me that they would hate for me to cancel my trip because of the likely hood that I get hired (again, the process is long and difficult and you have to be basically 100% "the right candidate" to get it - so my chances are low just as everyone else).

What would you do? Opinions?

  1. If you are able to go on another interview later, I would take the trip, if you do get the job it will be a while before you can vacation again. Have fun!

  2. VACATION VACATION VACATION..... you will regret this more than a job that you don't even know if you will get. Other jobs/opportunities will come along. And this job sounds intense, so who knows when the next opportunity will come to even take a vacation, especially one like this. Do not miss out on such an adventure...

  3. I'M REALLY STUMPED! since the job is not 100% guaranteed take the trip and DON'T LOOK BACK.
