I'm going to Japan in a few months. I am only staying there for a week. Any ideas on how much money I need?? btw: I am staying with a Japanese family and they said I don't need money for food. I just need money for shopping. Are shops generally expensive?? I am going to be around the Tokyo area. ~Thanks

  1. Take as much as you can.

  2. Tokyo is like a major city like New York or LA and the prices are similar

things that you buy in Tokyo can cost you just as much or more than things in NY or LA depending on where you shop. If you go to Roppongi (六本木区) the price of things will be much higher than if you are in other parts of Tokyo, and if you go to Ginza it is known as an upmarket area of Tokyo with many department stores, boutiques, restaurants and coffeehouses and is also expensive.

Best thing is to bring as much money as you can, and to talk with you Japanese host family, and ask them to show you around to the cheaper places if you want, or go for broke and shop in the upper scale districts.

    Just remember to have fun..

Btw~ even if they tell you not it is always a good idea to bring a gift to your host family to show your appreciation, and maybe treat them to dinner before leaving Japan.
