  1. There are two states worth visiting in the Gulf Coast, Veracruz and Tabasco.  In Veracruz there are tons of cities and towns worth to check out, including the capital city, also called Veracruz.  You can visit Papantla, el Tajin, Catemaco, Xalapa, etc.  In Tabasco you can visit Villa Hermosa and the Mayan ruins of Palenque.

There is a Bus line called ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) that runs in the area.  You can get routes, times and even buy tickets in the following page: https://www.ticketbus.com.mx/ticketbus/i...

  2. You can go to Coatepec and Xalapa they are very cultural and have great food. Both are 15 minutes apart. Can stay in mutiple b&b and ther is a wonderful place Hotel MAria Enriqueta at least try their Pears poached in Dulce de leche filled with almond praline. OR the LAngostinos in Salsa Verde in "Bonillas" restaurant.  In Xalapa there is a great antropology musem.

Further south you can visit Santiago, San Andres and Catemaco in the Tuxtla region. Catemaco offers eco-tourism,  and a beutiful lake, some movies have been filmed there like Apocalypto, The medicine man, the one w michale douglass, devitto to name a few. Nearby there are some near virgin beaches, rivers, etc. Also near Santiago there is a Olmec museum. The tuxtlas were a very important pre-hispanic region. Don't forget to try the typical sweets, and the carne de chango and pellizcadas.

It is better to take a bus, since ther roads can be somewhat difficult to understand.
