I am planning a trip to Niagara Falls from Chicago.

From Friday to Sunday.

Also, I'm going to be driving through Detroit.

I was wondering if you could tell me what are some nice things to see on the way that are close to the road and what do I must visit at the Falls.

Thanks

  1. Must do "Maid of the Mist" and increadable trip almost through the waterfall.  This activity was on my bucket list and I was so happy when it was given to me as a birthday gift.  Have a great time, avoid the casino (it is awful)  other than that do all the tacky things on the Canadian side, it is so much fun.

  2. In Detroit, stop in downtown for a few hours and visit Greektown. It's a Greek ethnic area with lot's of Greek restaurants and Bakeries. There's also a casino in Greektown, as well as MGM Grand Detroit casino. Caesars Windsor hotel & casino is located on the Canadian side in Windsor. The Renaissance  Center (GM building) has an observation deck at the top that provides great views of Detroit / Windsor. There's also a mall at the Renaissance Center at street level. If you want to view / take pictures of the Detroit skyline, the best views are on the Canadian side at the Windsor riverfront park. Between Detroit / Windsor and Niagara Falls, there isn't much to see. It's basically like driving through Kansas between there and Niagara Falls.

On the Canadian side of the falls, visit Clifton Hill. It’s basically a tourist trap with lot’s of tacky stores, arcades, haunted houses and fast food establishments, but it’s a fun place to visit, especially at night when all the neon lights are flashing. There’s also a huge ferris wheel at Clifton Hill. The observation areas on the Canadian provide the best views of the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. Marineland is a theme park, similar to Sea World (but it’s definitely not as good as Sea World), with lot’s of rides and aquatic attractions. There are also other attractions on the Canadian falls like Journey behind the falls and the Niagara Whirlpool Aero car. Most of the “natural” attractions are maintained by the Niagara Falls Park Commission, there’s a link to their site below that provides a list of all of their attractions. You should also visit the American side to experience the attractions there and visit the state park. If you’re going to go on Maid of the Mist (the boat that takes you up to the falls), I would suggest boarding from the American side because the line ups are shorter. It’s very easy to travel between the American and Canadian sides. You can walk across the bridge as much as you want, just have your passport or birth certificate with you.
