Question:

Trip to towns on the coast of Ireland?

I am planning a trip to Ireland with a friend of mine. One of the options that we are looking at is doing our own tour instead of using a company. We really like the coastal scenery so we would like to visit about 3 towns (staying 3-4 nights in each) that are close to each other. We don't want to get a car (too expensive for our budget) so we would probably take a bus. We are looking for the small town feel, great views, nice people, and the pubs where everyone breaks out singing irish folk music.

Any suggestions of where we could go?

  1. Keep to the west coast. Galway, Kerry, Clare. Stay away from Dublin and the East altogether. The nicer scenery and atmosphere is on the West and I think you'll enjoy it more. Dublin is just another city but the West still carries some magic. =) And you could fly into Cork or Knock (Galway) airport to get over that side of the country.

  2. Get out to Connemara - Clifden, Roundstone and Westport in particular. You'll love it.

  3. I would recommend the western coast of Ireland, Galway to be precise. There is a lot to see from there south including the Cliffs of Moher, etc. Galway is known for its lively atmostphere. The city center is a load of fun with its many street performers and pubs.  Kinsale to the south is also beautiful. There are so many options, but I would definitely recommend Galway.

p.s. You can easily travel Ireland on your own without a tour.  You can always pick up smaller tours leaving/day trips from the cities you visit. They're everywhere and a great deal.
