Triple Bend Handicap 2011 at Hollywood Park - Smiling Tiger and Amazombie face off
Hollywood Race Track at Inglewood is to host the Grade 1 Triple Bend Handicap. Smiling Tiger and Amazombie are to have a raunchy duel this year, as they race over the seven furlongs of the cushion track.
It has been slotted as race nine on the race card on July 2, 2011.
Smiling Tiger has been working out vigorously at the Hollywood Track to practice for the $250,000 Triple Bend Handicap. Smiling Tiger’s earnings up till now are a total of $999, 353.
The four year old chestnut colt completed a five furlong workout in 58.60 seconds on June 9, 2011. He also breezed six furlongs in 1 minute and 11.40 seconds on June 23, 2011.
Smiling Tiger will be breaking from post 3. His career seems to be at its peak as the speed, and, volatility demonstrated by him are the quickest of his life. The same sentiment was echoed by Smiling Tiger’s trainer, “He’s had time between races, and that’s
when he blasts off, He’s doing really good right now. We think he’s at his apex”.
The son of Hold That Tiger was unable to gratify his trainer, Jeff Bonde, in his last attempt in the Churchill Downs Stakes held on May 7, 2011. He was making his first start under the Twin Spires.
The five time graded stakes winner stooped to a disappointing sixth place in the Churchill Downs Stakes. He was ridden by Joel Rosario. Despite his poor performance in that race he will still have the jockey services of Joel Rosario.
Smiling Tiger races for Philip Lebherz and Alan Klein, he is attempting to earn himself a third Grade 1 win in the Triple Bend Handicap. As a three-year old Smiling Tiger won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar on August 1, 2010, he was facing horses
older than himself in that race.
In another start against elder horses, he scored a win. The race was known as the Grade 1 Ancient Title Stakes and it was held on October 9, 2010.
The weight limit assigned to Smiling Tiger is 122 pounds. The weight assigned to Smiling Tiger is less than of the other contestant, Amazombie.
Amazombie in his last start was deprived of a third consecutive win in the Grade 3 Los Angeles Handicap. The race was held on May 30, 2011. The five year old gelding was disqualified from first position as he was accused of bullying his way to the front
mid-stretch.
Camp Victory, who won the Los Angeles Handicap, is also taking part in the Triple Bend Handicap. Amazombie was ridden by Mike Smith in the Los Angeles Handicap. In the Triple Bend Handicap, Mike Smith is again going to be the jockey of Amazombie.
Amazombie aims to achieve a second Triple Bend Handicap for his trainer, Bill Spawr, who scored the earlier one in 1989 with Sensational Star.
The Bill Spawr and Thomas Sanford trained and co-owned gelding has won eight out of his 19 starts. With these wins his bank roll is boosted to $ 505, 780. His major wins include him winning the Grade 2 Potrero Grande at Santa Anita on April 3, 2011 and the
Tiznow Stakes on California Gold Rush Day on April 23, 2011 to be precise. He was sired by Northern Afleet.
