Triple bogey costs Phil Mickelson the victory in the Masters Tournament   – Golf News
Phil Mickelson’s triple bogey on the fourth hole on the final day of the Masters Tournament cost him the victory at the Augusta National Golf Club, on Sunday, April 8, 2012.
Mickelson was playing in the final group that was supposed to tee off at 7:40 pm British time. Therefore, he was excited to get off with most of the leaderboard’s situation in front of him.
He said that he was excited about his group, as he always enjoys being part of the last group of the last day of the tournament.
“The final group, on Sunday at the Masters, is the greatest feeling in the world for a professional golfer,” he said. “To have made a run on the back nine [on Saturday] to put myself in that final group – that’s awesome”.
His compatriot, Hunter Mahan, also commented on Mickelson’s charge on Saturday by saying, “That’s very Phil, that’s very Augusta”.
Yet, Mickelson’s start was not as good as he expected. He had to face a triple bogey on the par-three fourth hole to go way behind the lead.
Three birdies afterwards were not enough to challenge Louis Oosthuizen and Bubba Watson on top of the leaderboard.
Mickelson has recorded a total of four major title victories in his career. The most interesting fact of his victories is that he earned all of them while playing in the last group.
That is why he was so delighted to have the same situation once again. However, when he reached the fifth hole, he had already three short for the round.
Still, he managed to gather his confidence and kept on playing his natural game. Yet, he failed to match the score that was required on the final day.
Oosthuizen and Bubba Watson tied for the top position at the end of the round and both were forced to enter the playoff.
Thereafter, Watson clinched the victory after making a par shot on the second extra hole against Oosthuizen’s bogey.
It was Watson’s first major title victory of the career and eight in a row by any player to record a win for the first time.
