I'm looking for a Tripod with good stability for under $75. Can anyone give me some recommendations? I'm an artist and basically just going to be using it when photographing oil paintings and other artwork. So I won't be carrying it around anywhere.

  1. Best Buy has decent tri-pods for under $100.00. They are sturdy and a good entry point. Don't fool yourself though, invest in a good one eventually. You will notice the difference.

  2. There are none unless you can find a good used one.  Most stable tripods are in the $200 and up range.   You sometimes can find good used tripods on craigslist.

IF you do buy such a tripod, buy a remote shutter release too, that will help reduce any camera movement.

  3. Okay, I'm close to your price range, but a little over.

I've got a couple, but the one I link to below is very versatile and stable.  It's the one I leave in the car.  I'm 6'6" and can raise it higher than I can use the viewfinder.  Handy feature is that the center column comes out to be a monopod.  No ball head, but I'm not all that sold on those anyway.

  4. You should buy tripods the same way that motorcyclist should buy helmets.  They figure the price it would cost to replace their heads and you should figure the price it would cost to replace your camera.  I have 2 $400 tripod units.

  5. save your 75 dollars and add to it until you can buy a decent tripod. don't waste your money.

i got a decent set up at a local camera shop for under 160 dollars, but it is barely decent...expect to pay 200 seriously.

  6. There were some good answers already given, so I won't repeat the comments discussing the advantage of quality v/s price.  The thing I would like you to consider, is your tripod is probably going to be your longest held piece of photographic equipment you will ever own.  I still have, and use, a tripod I bought used 35 years ago and it was 25 years old then.  There is no substitution for high quality long lasting equipment that may not look fancy, but will always work for you.

I suggest looking at the best tripod for the type of photography you are using, then see if you can buy one used from a reputable on-line source or local photographic dealer. I can say that Bogen/Manfretto are among the names to trust. Make sure you get one with interchangeable heads.
