Trish Johnson leads the Sicilian Ladies Italian Open on third day – Golf news
A group of three players is now leading the second round of Sicilian Ladies Italian Open at the scenic Il Picciolo Golf Club, with their respective scores of four-under for the moment. American Christina Kim, Frenchwoman Julie Greciet and Italian Stefanie
Croce are contending for the summit in the second round, although, no one has been able to overtake, Trish Johnson’s overnight lead.
Johnson, one of the grizzled veterans on the Ladies European Tour, clinched the first round lead in the latest Sicilian Ladies Italian at the scenic Il Picciolo Golf Club. The rookie of the year in 1987 and the LET Money Leader in 1990, Johnson, thrashed
the field yesterday, and rendered Croce’s early lead a severe blow in the evening.
Johnson carded five birdies on the front and went over to post three more on the back, conceding three bogeys in the process. She closed the round with two more birdies on the last holes, posting an overwhelming six-under, 66.
The 21-time winner on the Ladies European Tour said, “I’m not counting any chickens. I had a good day today, but you’ve seen some scores from very good players who haven’t. I played okay, putted nicely and did well today but two more days around here and
it’s a bit of a survival test.”
Conditions in Sicily at the moment are not much favourable for players on the field, as temperatures are gradually falling with intermittent showers in the middle. Mount Etna, which overlooks the scenic Il Picciolo, is now covered with snow and players will
have to batter tough conditions on the final day, especially in the morning session.
Louise Stahle and Australian Karen Lunn are tied for fourth place at the moment, with their third round scores of three-under. Lunn has just tee-ed off for her third round, while Stahle is playing for the remaining holes of her back nine.
Johnson will be hoping to capitalise on her earlier gains to lift the title on the weekend, marking her 22nd victory on the tour. She has not won a title since the Tenerife Ladies Open in 2009. She holds a permanent membership of the tour and
was part of the Solheim Cup team in 1990, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2005, and 2007.
