Tristan Lamasine takes down Robin Kern in the quarter-final of Boys’ singles – French Open 2011
Local wildcard entrant, Tristan Lamasine battled past Robin Kern of Germany in the quarter-final clash of the Boys’ category of the French Open on Thursday. Being played in Paris, France, Lamasine wrapped up the contest in straight
sets 6-4, 7-6(6), taking one hour and thirty four minutes to book a spot in the semi-finals of the Grand Slam tournament.
It was an evenly poised matchup featuring brilliant tennis, with both competitors throwing out their best at each other. Lamasine took advantage of Kern’s sloppy start to the game and took the opening set with ease, getting one
up in the contest. The German then made a strong comeback in the following set and took his opponent to his limits before Lamasine finally concluded victory in second set tie breaker.
The 18-year-old French competitor delivered 67 percent of his first serve on target, firing five aces and conceding four double faults in the contest. Lamasine kept winning crucial points in the game and amazingly reeled off 43
out of 55 first serve points en route to victory. He crafted merely two break chances in the entire matchup and converted one of them in the opening set to get the competitive advantage over his opponent.
Kern’s bleak serve of just 54 percent earned him 31 out of 43 points, which were certainly not enough to catch up with Lamasine in the contest. The German had seven break opportunities in the match but he carelessly frittered away
all of those chances to finish the game on the losing end.
A clear difference between the agility of the two contestants was seen in the contest, as the French appeared very proactive to trace down the occasional drop shots from his opponent, who failed to do the same because of his sloppy
footwork.
The contest took off with both boys having a cautious start to the game but Lamasine gradually started to gather up pace to take down the German opponent. The only serve break of the competition came in the opener and Lamasine
sealed the first set at 6-4 to get hold of the matchup. The following set witnessed some intense tennis from both opponents and the scores got tied at 6-6, as none of the competitors could break the opponent’s serve.
Lamasine eventually finished off the contest at 7-6(6) to book a date with Bjorn Fratangelo of the United States in the semi-final of the French Open. The American upset the fourth seeded Briton, Oliver Golding in straight sets
6-1, 6-1, in the quarter-final.
