Question:

Triumph Bonneville a good beginner bike?

I'm not a new rider, but I was looking at the Triumph motorcycles pretty much for the first time at a dealer and noticed the very simple and traditional style of the Bonneville. Very old school design and not a very large or heavy bike either.

While it may not be the cheapest or the fanciest looking motorcycle, how would you rate it to recommend it as a first motorcycle to someone who don't want a Japanese bike nor a Harley?

  1. How could anyone not want a Harley.  I suppose a Bonnie is a decent starter scoot.  But I won't trade my Hog for one. Good luck and keep riding.

  2. The Bonny is a great ride. Its made to look old but has all high tech in it. the engine has 900ccm. This is not really a small bike. Don't forget it is a roadster made for winding roads like the way they are in England. You can't ride a long monster and be very agile and able to drive around tight winding roads. Check the Seat position, it helps to angle down on windings. Forget the Harleys, the bonny is bombing them away.

  3. I darn near bought one in the '80s as my first bike.

Only reason I didn't was no money. It was all tied up with moving expenses as we were shifting homeport. Too bad, really. I could have brought it on the ship with me and saved shipping, too.

A new one is going to have a lot more than a 250cc, but I do believe that it can be handled well if done with a little care.

  4. I had one of the first ones out. They are so nice, some one borrow mine, and never brought it back.

    1 00% fantastic machine

you can even buy a kit to get rid of the emission controls and get back a few horsies

  5. Hello,, nothing wrong with a Trump , BSA is good also, s***w those bombing Nipponese,&,remember the alamo!!

  6. that's as close of a bike on the market to a sportster 883 as they can come, both great bikes.  i find bad company's comment entertaining as he's so quick to pick on harleys, hehe

a bonny is a great bike.... i keep looking at one near me with a sidecar, that's a sweet rig

  7. They are very nice bikes. My next door neighbor has a Bonneville and he loves it.I'd like to have a Thruxton myself

  8. The Bonnie is a good bike for beginners provided you feel comfortable on it.They have good power without being scary.

I had a 2002 Centenary model which I loved...started first time never leaked oil, and sounded great with the Triumph aftermarket pipes.

I'm 6'3" and never felt uncomfortable on it, I clocked up over 30,000kms on it in about 9 months, mainly touring and it handled it fine.

If you want a bike to learn on and keep, you couldn't get a better bike.(although you will have to get used to people coming up to you and saying "nice restoration")

And if any harley rider makes derogatory comments, just point out that he is riding an antiquated, bad handling, underpowered, overpriced tractor!

and yes, I have owned 3 harleys before and would not waste my money on them...I like to ride, not just pose around on a bike
