I've liked triumph heralds and toledo's since i was 13. I'm now 25 and just passed a driving test (UK) but want to know if a Triumph would be expensive to run and how reliable are they? Would it fail to start if it was cold or raining? Would I have to keep finding parts for it? How hard is it too find parts? What price would I have to pay for one in an ok condition? I love classic cars.

  1. I sold all my Triumphs, had 2 TR3s and 2 TR4s -- also an AH Sprite.  The problem was finding good, reliable parts to keep them running.  Aftermarket parts are a pain, some don't fit right or need modified to work.

The word "motoring" takes on a new meaning.  You are constantly keeping aware of your cars sounds, vibrations, etc.  You will check it after you stop, you will check it before you start it... it's constant.  Classic cars are NOT a worry free daily driver.

Sometimes it would fail to start on nice warm, sunny days -- they don't need weather as an excuse.  It was usually something overlooked in the maintenance.

As mentioned earlier, they make great pets.  Do not plan on using it as your only car.

What you pay is directly proportional to the condition so learn about the car you want, join a club for technical help and start searching.

  2. As long as you are committed" to marriage" with them. Reliability directly related to 'TLC', regular maintenance, hopefully garage kept, etc. And pray for moderate weather. Beyond that - they make great family pets and have brought me many enjoyable rides. But, as in so many UK vehicles...beware of Lucas, the Prince of Darkness!

  3. 1960 triumph tr3 if you find one (left hand drive) please contact me parts should be no problem as there are enought of them out there...

  4. They're mechanically simple cars, easy to maintain but require regular maintenance...stay on top of corrosion and moisture in electrical contacts and connectors and you should be good for years. I drive a TR-8 in Canada, and I have no problem with cold starts.
