Wow, UV Oasis! That's a great pic. I've seen some photos of skinny crescents, but that one takes the cake.

  1. Of course.  Earth shine.  The Earth is full from the New Moon.

  2. Yes, but not easy.

  3. i think therefore i can!

nah, it's the same ole one in a different light

    only with your eyes open

    am i close?

  4. Yes.

    1.  The new moon is visible from around dawn to dusk.  During the winter when the nights are long, the sky is dark enough to see it around dawn and dusk.

    2.  Like you keep alluding, if the view of the sun is blocked during the day (like during an eclipse) it's possible to see the new moon.

    3.  If you are above Earth's atmosphere (like on the Space Shuttle) there won't be any skyglow preventing you from seeing the new moon.

    4.  I've never heard of anyone bothering to do this, but a good telescope with the right filter could probably see the new moon anytime during the day.

  5. It has been photographed (with enough details to recognize the mariae and the major craters)

  6. yes, people will be seeing it perfectly on august 1st

    its called a solar eclipse

  7. yes i have before.

  8. Honestly, I can't believe some of these answers.

The answer is a resounding NO...

During a solar eclipse, maybe, but not really. You are only seeing the fact that the surface of the sun is blocked out by the moon - not the moon's surface.

If the moon is not eclipsing the sun, then you CANNOT see the moon.  During "new moon" none of the lunar surface is visible from the earth.  It's too close to the sun.  That's what new moon means.

Good question though.  As I said, I'm surprised at some of the other answers.

Good to "read" you again...  :)

  9. duh ? :D

  10. It isn't easy.
