Trixie ? Patent ? Treble ? Help !!!?

Is a TRIXIE bet picking the winner or place on 3 seperate races or one race picking 1st 2nd 3rd places ?

Is a PATENT over seperate races or can it be placed on one race ?

I have always classed a TREBLE as picking 3 horses in 3 different races but Mulholland bookies here in Ireland have taken my pal's bet as a 1st 2nd 3rd in one race ? surely this is wrong as the whole object of treble is to achieve 3 1st places a win the maximum ammount possible! the other two horses can only be placed and as such would only receive a quarter of the ods...Can someone out there please clarify ???? cheers...Smiffy
