Question:

Trojan or just password sniffing?

I have 2 computers here., my laptop and my desktop. We have no router here so we decided to pay for a hotspot for the laptop and continue to use our regular internet connection for the desktop (the hotspot is conviniently placed right next to the appartment)

But, after a few days here, i received an e-mail from ebay saying my account password has been reset because some one else was accessing it, and my father completely lost his ebay account. I scanned the desktop many times for trojans, but all i found were vulnerabilities in programs we never use (7-zip, open office) and for the one in flash player we just updated it.

What i want to know is if it is more likely that there is a virus on our desktop or someone is password sniffing on the hotspot.

also, the hotspot is not encrypted.

  1. TWO POSSIBILITIES:

    1.

It's a scam email...don't use the link.  It's phishing to get your password.  If you already used the link, go to ebay now, and change your password again.

    2.

An ebay "hacker" got into your ebay account.

    NOT into your computer.

    This is real.

The best thing for you to do right now is go online

    THROUGH YOUR ADDRESS BAR

(NOT through an email link !!!!)

    Go to http://www.ebay.com

    and log-into your account.

    Immediately change your password.

Also go to PayPal and change your password.

Now, look for any open icon to ebay, on your desktop or in your favorites to your ebay account and get rid of it.

Also, if you have left a link to your ebay account on any web site, or email, get rid of that.

You may have given out YOUR link entrance to your ebay account to someone else,

when you should have given the consumer link entrance?  That has happened before.

Let ebay know that your ebay account has been hacked.

Look for your ebay invoice charges, and if anyone has kidnapped your seller page, let ebay know to reimburse you,

and you should take down the seller page.

    It happened to me.  :(

    But, TG it's fixable.

Just be careful to not give your entrance link to ebay to anyone.  And be careful to LOG OUT from Ebay when you leave the site.

    ^j^

  2. If its not encrypted then its probably someone sitting outside hacking you accounts, make sure you have a firewall.

I'd recommend Comodo Pro its free from http://www.download.com

  3. The ebay email is a scam contact ebay and send them the email so they can shut that server down if you ever wish to change your ebay info go to ebay via the url DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS IN THAT EMAIL!.

  4. The password may have been changed by someone who had access to the Ebay account.  Anytime I change my password for anything it always sends me a confirmation to my email address.  I don't think it's password sniffing that is just a notification.

You may want to check that out.  As long as Ebay didn't ask you they were just notifying you.  In your case your dad didn't do it so something is going on with the account.
