Trojans of Mount Oliver College suffer home loss – Volleyball news
The men’s volleyball team of Mount Oliver College was defeated at home by the Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne volleyball (IPFW) on Friday, January 27.
The visiting IPFW squad proved to be better and finished the game with final scores of 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 23-25, 25-16). The hosts, despite having the competitive edge of familiar court, dropped the decision. Following the loss of two sets in row, the Trojans
put up a valiant effort to win the third stanza but IPFW put an end to the show by capturing fourth and final set of the match. With victory over Trojans, the Mastodons of IPFW improved to 3-3 on the season, while Mount Oliver team fell to 2-3 record.
IPFW’s Corey Frain served as the main weapon for his team as he tallied 12 kills. Elsewhere four Mastodons added at least 10 kills apiece. The setter of Mastodons played an important role in his team’s victory. He provided 44 assists and helped the team
to win against Trojans. The match-high kills were added by Adam Miracle of Mount Oliver College.
The match was opened with balanced action from both sides as the score shifted up with close gaps.
However, the guest team had relatively higher ratio of scoring points. They picked up the pace after 10- 6 and incorporated kills by Eddie Rivera and Omar Rivera. The scoreboard showed considerable difference of points of two teams at 20-9. The IPFW was
ahead in the game and maintained its lead until the set points at 25-12. The home squad could hardly go into double digit scores but lost first frame after making only 12 points.
The Trojans were dragged under pressure after losing the first set with such big margin. The Mount Oliver Coach regrouped the players and urged them to tackle the situation. Both sides exchanged long rallies and the scoreboard showed ties of 1-1, 2-2, 3-3,
4-4 and 5-all in early few minutes of second set.
Gradually, IPFW changed the strategy and paced things with back-to-back attacks. Meanwhile, the Trojans caught up in flurry of mistakes and suffered the damage. IPFW extended its lead to 2-0 by winning second set, 25-17.
Both teams remained incredibly close in third set, whereas Trojans hit the mark and achieved success with only narrow margin of two points, 25-23.
In the fourth set, the teams closely contested until 9-9, before an authentic kill from Fyfield put IPFW in lead at 10-9. Afterwards, the Mastodons continued with success and did not allow Trojans to come near.
John Nunns of home team resisted in full force but failed to stop the pumped-up Mastodons from winning fourth set. The visiting IPFW squad closed fourth set at 25-16 and announced match victory.
