I have some guppies, neonsm widdow tetras and 2 plecs, my tank seems to stay around 28 degrees. I constanly have a build of algea in the tank - is this because the temp is too high? If so, how would I alter this as my heater is doesnt have a thermostat on it

Thanks

  1. soup n**i is right, algae will grow if is exposed to many sunlight or aquarium light,if your tank is next to a window, that may be the problem.

  2. have a thermometer with the tank if you dont have one. tropical fishes take 74F- 82F.

  3. i recommend that you go to the pet  store and buy a thermostat or thermometer and i would not go with a glass one they always fall off i would then talk to the pet store about a bottle that can reduce the amount of algae then to be on the safer side buy some algae eaters and then the algae would be more controllable

  4. Algae is entirely urelated to temperature.  I would turn the temperature down to about 26* just for the fishes' sake, but this won't have any affect on the algae.  Algae needs light, nitrogen (either ammonium or nitrate), and phosphate to grow.  By cutting the light down to no more than 10 hours a day, you can limit its growth, and when doing that in conjunction with reduced feedings and more frequent gravel vacuumings (to keep nitrate and phosphate levels low), you can prevent it almost entirely.

  5. 28 degrees is way too low for any fish to survive tropical fish need about 75-80 degree fareinheit. If you are talking about celcius with the degrees im teribly sorry. Just put some baby plecs and if they are rapidly growing then they should be cleaning the algae from you tank. Also put a live plant and a fake plant so they absorb the algae. Your water is probably too warm so i would cool it down about 15 degrees fareiheit then put the water heater 5 degrees warmer.
