Trott, Broad prevent Canada scare in England’s first warm-up
England were stunned by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Canada-c748 as the minnows came close to a victory in their warm-up match in Bangladesh ahead of the ICC Word Cup 2011. However, the Poms eventually won the match by 16 runs.
The wicket did have some assistance for the bowlers, but overall it was a good batting track, which made English captain Andrew Strauss choose to bat first after winning the toss.
Strauss didn’t get off to an ideal start as the left-hander was undone in the second over of the match. He scored just one run off five balls. His wicket brought the in-form English batsman Jonathan Trott at the crease.
Trott joined Kevin Pietersen, who was promoted up the order to open along-side his captain. The shuffle in the order didn’t prove to be as successful as England would have liked, as Pietersen was out after scoring 24 runs off 28 balls.
Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood failed to support Trott and both got out in single figures of 8 and 9 respectively. The fall of three quick wickets saw http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c749 struggling at 86 for the loss of 4 wickets.
However, Trott and wicketkeeper-batsman Matt Prior rescued their team from trouble with a 54-run stand for the fifth wicket. Trott scored a steady 57 runs off 81 balls, but failed to carry onto make a big one for his team. He was out in the 32nd over of
England’s innings.
The fall of Trott’s wicket yet again, saw quick wickets falling and England were in deep trouble with seven wickets down for just 158 runs. Stuart Broad, who returned to cricket after an injury, helped Prior save his team from disaster and the pair constructed
a crucial 51-run stand for the eighth wicket.
Prior scored the highest – 78 runs off 80 balls. He got good support from Broad, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ajmal-Shahzad-c42489 and James Tredwell, who scored 22, 10 and 11 respectively before their team was bowled-out for 243 in the final over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khurram-Chohan-c1791 and Harvir Baidwan were terrific for the Canadian team as they took three wickets each in the match.
In its turn, the Canadian batting went off to a terrible start and it looked as if the team will be out within a 100 runs. They lost their top five batsmen for just 28 runs and England was on top at the stage.
Zubin Surkari and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rizwan-Cheema-c2328 guided their team out of trouble with a 68-run partnership for the sixth wicket. However, Surkari was out after scoring a steady 22 runs off 45 balls.
The wicket didn’t stop Cheema from scoring runs freely and he constructed a solid 60-run partnership with Khurram Chohan for the 7th wicket. Cheema was unfortunate to be dismissed just seven runs short of a century. He got out on 93 from 71 balls.
Chohan didn’t lose focus after Cheema’s wicket went down and continued to play sensibly. However, he was the last man to be dismissed for Canada after scoring 44 runs off 74 balls. Canada were all-out for 227 in 46.1 overs.
The return of Broad played out very well for the Poms as the young all-rounder scalped a five-wicket haul after his useful 22 runs. England will be hoping to do much better against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755 in their second warm-up match on 18th February.
