I am using an IBMR50e laptop, running Windows XP professional. As my laptop did not come with built in wireless, I am using a Netgear WG511U adapter. The trouble is this: I have succesfully set up (in my apartment bulding, for use on 4 PC's) a wireless (11G) network using a Linksys W54GC router (currently, the network is protected by a 16bit, WEP passkey). The wireless network is accessible on all of the other PC's in my building but mine. Specifically, here's what's going on: when I scan for the network, I see it no problem. If the security on the network is turned off, I connect and am able to browse the web. If security is ON, then my adapter still connects to the network, but when I open my browser, I get a message from my browser(Mozilla) reporting that it cannot connect to the web. Everything works fine without security, but the moment I enable the WEP password, I can no longer connect. I have verified multiple times that I am entering the passwphrase correctly -- and to make sure that I'm not making some mistake, I've tried entering the same password alternately in the "passphrase" and "manual key" fields offered to me by the network adapter software. In neither instance am I able to connect. Here's some speculation that might help the kind soul who can assist me: when I purchased the laptop, it came with "AccessIBM" wireless software already installed. The odd thing is that I can't seem to disable the AccessIBM software (but the option to only use the AccessIBM software doesn't work, as the NetGear software needs to be running to use the NetGear adapter). I've been able to connect to unprotected networks without any problem, and I wonder if the issue with the protected network is that the AccessIBM software is somehow interfering.
