I am using a Linksys wireless adapter to connect to the internet. Recentley I can not connect to the internet and when I go into the network mapping it shows limited access for my wireless router. It however does show a strong signal from the router. Any help would be great.

  1. You might need to hook the wireless router directly to your laptop (via USB or network cable) and surf to it so you can check the settings.

ALWAYS password your connection, and I usually set the max number of connections to however many computers will be using it.  You can always change it if someone else comes over and needs to connect.

This will keep other people that live close to you (especially in apartments) from using your connection (possibly for less than legal things) - people will even drive around looking for unpassworded connections with no security enabled - they call it 'wardriving'.

If it is still acting funky, you might want to reinstall the drivers for your wireless card, or contact the manufacturer of the router to see if they can suggest anything else.

  2. Do any of your computers connect to the internet.  In general, the reason you have limited access is due to a problem with your internet connection.  I have found that resetting the router.(unplugging it for 10 seconds then plugging it in again) works if it is my router acting up.  But it can also be a problem with your ISP, try resetting your modem(make sure you are getting a signal) and see if that helps.  You might want to also contact your ISP.

  3. It is possible, that the DHCP Server on your Router is not functioning properly.

DHCP works by automatically assigning IP's to Clients.

You will need to logon to the router and check it.

For this to work, you need to know what IP the Router has and configure an IP on your computer in the same subnet.

For example, if your Router has 192.168.1.1, you could configure your computer manually with 192.168.1.2.

Then open a browser and enter the routers ip. You should then be connected. Check that the DHCP is configured and running.

If you use Vista, then I saw this problem before, it seems like a bug in Vista with Wireless.
