I have a Canon ZR850 digital camera. I am unable to find the original usb cable to connect the camera to the computer and I can't find on compatible on-line. Does anyone know where I could find one? Also, it would appear I need a firewire to transfer my DV video in the quality I want. Again, does anyone know where I could find one?

Yes, in order to transfer digital video from the miniDV tape to the computer, you will need a firewire 400 port on your computer

and a firewire cable (whether 4-pin to 4-pin or 4-pin to 6-pin depends on your computer's firewire port - the camcorder is always 4-pin.

Since we don't know what computer you have we don't know if it has expansion slots to add a firewire port - or if it maybe already has one.

  2. Minidv camcorders use a firewire connection. You camcorder didn't come with one.

If you have a mini dv (cassette) camcorder….

Your dv camcorder needs a firewire connection (ieee 1394) in order to download video, your PC probably did not come with a firewire port, so you will have to buy one and install it, since most computers (except possibly brand new) don't come with a firewire port, your camcorder did not come with a firewire cord so you have to purchase a cord too. Your camcorder did come with a USB cord and that is used for downloading stills from your camcorder. Make sure your camera is in playback mode.

The fine print in your manual makes reference to firewire (ieee 1394) connection.
