Question:

Trouble hooking up a ceiling light fixture?

I am replacing a ceiling light fixture. The fixture I took down had two wires, one of which was spliced with what looks like a black wire, and another wire that was spliced together with two other wires, each of the other two wires originate from a different piece of romex.

The problem is that the new fixture does not have any wires I can splice into the house wires, instead the new fixture is set up so you take your L1, L2 and ground wires and insert them into holes on the fixture only big enough for one wire.

I believe I would be correct to take an additional piece of insulated wire, splice it into the two wires spliced together and insert that additional wire into the corresponding hole, then just take the black wire and insert that into the other hole. Am I right?

Also I believe the two wires that are spliced together are neutral and the other non-spliced wire (which looks black, hard to tell it has been painted) is hot, is this correct? I ask rthis because I thought there had to be a switched hot, hot, and neutral with lighting....
