Ok, anyone from australia please answer me this question, everyone give me your opinion.

Okay so i was looking at pictures of spiders on the net, and on the comments people were quoting like "I went to see my friend in australia and i saw this big hairy thing!"

But there were LOADS of comments like that...

So i want to ask, while in your house do you actually worry about spiders like that? Is it often you see them there?

Please give me your opinions i would really like to know.

Thanks alot.

  1. We actually get lots of scorpions in our house, especially when it rains as they try to come in for shelter. I don't think they can hurt you but I'm not really sure - we don't pay them any attention and no-one has had any problems. We also get heaps of spiders of various sorts, but rarely inside except for daddy long-legs that are small and harmless.

The big hairy hunstman spiders that sometimes come inside don't hurt you, in fact I tend to get a bit attached to the occasional one that moves in. When it disappears after a few weeks or months I actually feel a little sad - that sounds crazy I know.

We get zillions of millipedes in wet weather, there can easily be 50 in each room all over the walls and floor, they are utterly harmless but really annoying.

Mosquitos are by far the biggest problem, you need repellant in the warmer months when you go outside at night.

Australia is paradise for bugs and insects but it's extremely rare to have any problems, we just ignore them. Only one tip - don't leave your shoes outside overnight and if you're camping put away your sleeping bag during the day - sometimes things can crawl in.

  2. hi there - i'm from australia - i live in the suburbs of perth, western australia.

well, i wouldn't say i'm worried, but you do know from a young age that you need to look out for them.

about the scariest thing we commonly see is a huntsman spider (just google it).  they have a leg span about as large as a biro and from what i've heard, can give you a bit of a bite, but it's not deadly.  they do come inside and you normally see them up high on your walls - they don't build webs.  we used to see about three a year in my last house at a guess - i haven't seen one at my current home.

redbacks are not uncommon, you just need to be careful where you stick your hands when you are in the garden shed as they have nasty little webs in dark corners.  sometimes they are inside in dark undisturbed corners too.  i've seen a few redbacks at this house.

white-tail spiders are not uncommon in perth. some people have really awful allergic reaction to them (google white tail spider bite) and yes, i'm freaked out by those.  in the house i'm living in at the moment, i've only seen one in the shower.  at my last house, there was one between my bedsheets.  not nice.

so really, there are dangers, but you do look out for them.  spiders dont' hunt for humans and they aren't out to 'get you', they just happen to live in the same places.  you can live around them so long as you are aware that they may be around.

  3. Nothing that a slap of the thong won't fix.  You see them, you grab your thong and squish them.

  4. I was in Australia for a month in December and there were no problems with spiders. That was in Sydney and Melbourne.

  5. Hi, yes we do have alot of spiders, just yesterday i killed this big black hairy spider that i found in my garage that just had babies ( about 100) so i sprayed them all!! it was about 10-12cm. Don't know what breed. My grandfather gets alot of red-backs and I also killed a massive spider at his house it was huge about 20cm black with orange legs a few weeks ago, but i have never been bitten, i think as long as you spray and clean up the cob Web's they keep away. Huntsman are harmless, but i still kill them. They are big!! If you live near the bush there is alot more spiders, but i live in the city.

  6. We get daddy long legs in the house. they are harmless but they don't last llong because they become dinner for the gechos.

  7. there are more big hairy spiders up in the tropic's but down south have there fair share to

Sydney has the dreaded funnel web

there lots of mouse and bird spiders in the dryer regions and they are huge size of a dinner plate. and some even chase you ;-)  but we love them

  8. there are lots of variables........ like climate some spiders will come indoors when the weather is cold or raining

were you live you will only find certain spiders in certain areas of oz

the most comman spiders i deal with are huntsman spiders..... they look scary and sound scary but are relitivly harmless

    http://www.austmus.gov.au/factsheets/hun...

abd when i think about it my shoe is bigger than any spider....so im not scared!!

  9. There are lots of spiders in Australia, most are harmless.  The really deadly ones don't normally come into your home e.g. the Sydney Funnel Web.  The really big hairy spiders you saw were probably huntsman spiders and they are harmless enough.

  10. tell you what

when you get to Australia ok give me a hollow ok you can come out to my little place ok in the outback you will see one of the best sunsets you have ever seem by the way do not worry about george ok WHO !!  oh i see george he is a big black huntsman spider he will be sitting up in the corner in the loungeroom just waiting for dinner to come along or might be in the kitchen you never know where george might be ,

when you go outside be careful of my snakes that is over near the woodshed but could be under the porch as well depending if it a hot day or a mild day ,

but yep we got spiders but so does a lot of other countrys as well

  11. Yep. there are alot of spiders everywhere. Crawling on everyone.

    No..

Actually spiders arent found in houses much. I live in Sydney, I havnt seen a dangerous spider out in the open. I've seen them hiding though.. And i've seen some really huge ones around.

In my house, we get huntsman spiders, and daddy long legs mostly, i see them everyday.. the occasional red back..

We have a drop bear problem, not a spider problem mate. Those bears love to tear eyes out.

  12. I have problems with kangaroos. They're all under my bed. I worry about it.

  13. I'm an Australian, and live in an old cottage type house. We get quite a lot of white tailed/ white tipped spiders, which aren't all that scary looking, but supposedly turn your skin rotten if you get bitten. While we get loads of these, I have personally never been bitten, and actually don't know anyone who has!

  14. The only hairy spiders you have to worry about are some males with wandering hands that seem to not only appear from no where but seem to be multiple.

But all are easily fixed with a good whack with a shoe.

  15. The scariest looking ones are actually quite harmless. There are some more harmful ones about, but they are typically rather afraid of you hitting them with your shoe, and I don't know of anyone that's ever been bitten (not that it doesn't happen especially in the more remote areas, but it's not really very likely).  Here even some of the harmless ones seem to have been driven out by Asian house gecko's that manage to catch all the insects before them, removing their food source. (going and catching the insects seems to be more reliable than simply waiting for one to hit your web)

  16. We rarely see  hairy ones they look scary but are harmless. We get lots of daddy long leg spiders they catch flies insects for their lunch so we like them they are also harmless. I have never ever seen a funnel web and as long as the yard is kept rubbish free  redback spiders are not seen either. Not as bad as it seems.
