Question:

Trouble starting 1997 BMW 318i

I am trying to sell this car so I typically will drive it for about 5 minutes every day. Yesterday I started it up and it seemed to have trouble starting when I first started it, but it ran fine when I took it for a spin. When I got home I turned off the ignition and immediately tried to restart only for it to fail.

Then I had to jump-start it with another vehicle and then I let it run for about 10 minutes to charge the battery. I tried restarting several times throughout the rest of the evening and it started up fine.

I tried again today and it started fine, then I took it for a spin and then turned off the ignition, and immediately tried to start it again and it failed to do so again this time.

Would this be a bad battery not getting fully charged, or maybe a bad connection or maybe the alternator?

Any clues? Shouldn't the car start immediately again if the battery is in OK shape? And would only driving it for 5 minutes a day for two straight weeks have an effect on the battery or its electrical parts?

Thanks!

  1. Does it turn over when you try to restart it? If not, try a deep cycle charge or go to a battery store and have them load test your battery
