Question:

Trouble with Jack Russell ...??

I got a jack russell from the rescue centre 4 months ago, 7 months old, he's a very lively dog and was very naughty at first, it also took around a a month to get him toilet trained... Anyways, i thought i'd gotten over all that, but recently he's been pee'ing in the house, not even attempting to let me know when he wants to go out, just pee's on the floor where he stands... Last night was actually the final straw, i have baby gates up around the house to prevent him from going into certain rooms, but last night, i left the bedroom gate open while i went for a midnight pee, (i live in a ground floor apartment) the dog sneaked in there and pee'd in my bed, right in the part where i was sleeping... when i got back from the toilet he was laying at the end of the bed, ears back like he's done something wrong???

Why would he do this, is it just a complete lack of respect for my personal space or something, i'm actually considering taking him back to the rescue place, i cant live like this... any ideas?

  1. God it's so stressful isn't it?

I house trained our dog in a few days but she started doing the same thing.....as crazy as it sounds you just have to watch as much as possible and every little hint of sniffing or walking around with it's head low just grab him up and bring him to where ever you want him to pee. Try and get into the habit of keeping the gate closed behind you every time you go out of it...

I was taking her out every 2 hours for 3 days and also anytime I saw her sniffing around... Suddenly she started looking to go out to pee. I did the same with our last dog. Most of the time any accidents are my own fault for not watching her.

Believe me I know how angry you feel but just try it for a few days as hard as it will be...

I hope it'l work out for you...

    Best of luck

  2. Jack Russell's are crazy little dogs with a mind of there own, my daughter has one and if she isn't getting enough attention she is into all kinds of things and some times will p**p or pee right in front of us when we've taken her out already what we do is when she is bad we lock her in her crate for a while she hates that,  they have a tone of energy and need to be kept busy all the time, you might want to see a dog trainer for some idea's my daughters dog for the most part is ok as long as we keep her on a schedule and take her out to the bathroom then she is ok and at night we take her out around 10pm and then she is the crate at night we never let her just loose around the house maybe you should try taking her out before your ready for bed and then keeping her in the crate at night until you get up in the morning, they dont like to sleep in there own mess and most dog trainers recommend it,  crate training works for our dog along with making sure to take her out during the day on a schedule.

they do have a mind of there own and get into lots of trouble when not watched good luck give it one more try they are great dogs once you get them all trained and very loyal to you.

  3. Jack Russel's are known to be very hard to train, they are one of the liveliest breed of dogs to train. Maybe the dog feels hes getting lack of attention from you so is playing up, i once watched 'Its me or the dog' and it said dogs can play up for attention. try and spend more time with him and train him to pee outside again no matter how hard it seems. dont give up on him though, he'll get there.

  4. hi,

Developed in England some 200 years ago to hunt foxes, the Jack Russell Terrier, also known as the Parson Russell Terrier, is a lively, independent, and clever little dog. He's charming and affectionate, but he's also a handful to train and manage. For experienced dog owners only!

    hope this helps.

  5. Ok! Brace yourself! Some Dogs have an affection for the people who are around them the most. This usually means the owner. There is nothing that can be done at this point; except rubbing his little nose in it every time he does this. It is pure psychology; after a while he will get the picture and will stop this behavior.

  6. once a dog pees in a spot the smell is always there. There are products you can use to eliminate the smell. discipline the dog every time he goes where he is not suppose to. and reward him when he goes out side.

  7. Firstly, get your Jack Russell checked out by the vet. If he has a bladder problem, it's not his fault that he can't control his bladder. Training him will only make him worse as he knows he has done something wrong but can't do much about it.

If he's all fine, then I suppose more training is all you can do.

  8. Once you have elminiated (no pun intended) any medical cause for this behaviour change, I'm afraid you are going to have to face the possibility this lad is pushing the boundaries with you!  Bit like the terrible twos.  Just as you think you have it sorted, it's back to square one and this is what you have to do.  Go back to square one.  Do not leave him with the run of the house when you are not there to supervise, treat him as you did when you first got him.  He's going to have to get it into his head for once and for all that you Tarzan, he Jane - you are he/she who must be obeyed.  Or suffer the consequences.

Crate?  It might be worth the investment, if only for the sake of your Blood Pressure.  Having to take him back to Rescue would be very sad, and could well mean he then goes from home to home when this can be fixed, with a bit of rearrangement!  Don't let the b*gger beat you!

Oh and it's not that unusual - I had a pup who I spent the first 6 months of his life with 24/7.  Went back to work part time, and he went back to ....peeing all over the house as a sign that he was well miffed with the new routine.

  9. mine is 15weeks old, she peed on my bed for no reason, i was seriously pissed off, there was papers on the floor downstairs for her, i dont know why she would do that
