Question:

Trouble with Macro - Sony Alpha 350 DSLR?

I have recently purchased a Sony Alpha 350 DSLR which has a 'macro function', however it doesn't seem to work. I am using an 18mm - 70mm standard lens, but I'm unable to focus on close-up objects while in macro mode. Is there any reason why this may be happening? Is there a particular distance from the subject I should be? Would you suggest changing any functions/modes? Thanks.

  1. I suspect that yours came with the kit 18-70mm ZOOM lens like mine did ? You cannot get close with a zoom lens.

Just move away from the object a bit at a time until the automatic focus feature can kick in. Unfortunately with the zoom lens that will be quite some distance.

You will have to buy a macro lens if you want good macro shots.

I'm in the same boat with it.

  2. I was not aware that a dSLR has a macro function.

Anyway, a macro function is entirely up to the lens. I don't think most kit lenses focuses that closely anyway.

  3. Just putting it on the closeup mode is not going to give you a macro shot. What you need is a macro lens. All lenses will have a minimum focusing distance check the manual to find out what it is. It is probably atleast a foot though. Check out the following lens if you want to do macro shots. You don't have many to choose from but these ones are available.

  4. The macro scene mode found on most entry-level DSLRs only set the camera settings to give desirable results (activates flash, adjusts sharpening and contrast, etc.) with a close up or macro lens; it doesn't actually reduce the capable focus distance of the lens. Macro is a lens characteristic so you'll either have to purchase a dedicated macro lens, extension tubes, close-up filters, or construct a DIY setup for true macro (the latter 3 being the least expensive options).
