Question:

Trouble with computer start-up (ooh surprise) Please help!?

I switch my laptop on, type in my password to log in, and a box appears telling me:

"The application failed to initialize properly (then some random numbers in brackets). Click OK to terminate the application."

Whether I press OK, cross it off or leave it it goes to a blank white screen and does nothing more. I can't do anything.

What do i do? Help!

Thank You

  1. What OS are you running, try to start up in Safe Mode and see what happens, if you're running Windows

  2. You can try a system restore from "safe mode", or you can use "safe mode with networking" to download antispyware (Spybot or Adaware) and run these to clean up your system.

When you start the computer, you get a black screen with mostly white text, right.

The screen will go black for a second or two and then you will see the first "Windows" screen ok.

It is at the point where the screen goes black that you must push the F8 key. This will pop up a black screen that will have a few options on it for your startup mode. Choose safe-mode or safe-mode with networking (using the arrow keys)

When you get to the logon window, you should be able to login, and this is hopefully where your system will look like it is working properly. Do not worry about if the icons are oversized on the screen, these are like this because in safe-mode the graphics is usually quite "cut down" and many other services on your system will not have started.

Use the help menus to get to system restore and choose a date that you know for a fact your system could start up properly.

or, if you are in networking mode, you may be able to get onto the internet to download the antispyware programs.

Also, you could try a "check disk" from safe mode, which will repair corrupted system files. To do this, click on Start, then on Run and type in the following: chkdsk -f -r

When prompted choose "Yes" by typing Y and restart the PC.

An OS is an "Operating System". This would be Windows XP, Vista, Unix, Linux, MAC (with a variety of names of animals...panther, tiger, etc etc) to name a few. Yours is most likely Windows XP or Windows Vista - at a rough guess.

  3. email me.

  4. Download and run spybot and superantispyware

  5. go to a pc shop and tell them and they will fix it or send your laptop back if it is new
