Hello,

I work at a chain grocery store in Massachusetts. I work in the customer service booth as a night time bookkeeper. I have been having trouble with our fairly new Front end manager. She constantly harrasses me and degrades me. She acts like I am stupid and like I dont know how to do my job. She is also in charge of the schedule, and If i call out sick or if I offend her in any way, I get stuck cashiering or I get no hours. Well this week my coworker found a note on the schedule for the assisstant front end manager and it said not to give me any bookkeeping hours, only to give me cashiering hours, which they know I hate. I have NO idea what i did to deserve being treated like this. My friend who works there and does the same job as me only works every other weekend during the school year, and she is quitting in september. I work all week during the school week (we are in college) and I am always available for them, yet they continue to give her 3 or 4 nights in the booth!!

  1. My mother in law used to be a manager of a business. She told me one day when she had an employee she didn't want anymore she would reduce their hours or make them work where they did not want to. Eventually the employees quit because of the schedules they were worked. This saved her employer, a small business, from having to fire employees and having those employees claim unemployment, which the employers insurance would have to pay and increase the cost to the employer. If you quit you get nothing, if you get fired you might be able to.

As a college student consider this, when you graduate from school you can probably get a decent job, more then likely not at a grocery store. All jobs are Nobel, some pay more. You will be able to get a better job and the memories of yon grocery store will be a thing of the past. That manager may still be there. Be content with what you have.

  2. Keep notes of how she treats you.

If she is harassing you in front of other people and saying derogatory things in front of witnesses, she should be stopped.

If it is so bad that you can't put up with it any more, talk to a lawyer or someone at the Labour Board (not sure what it would be called where you are), but this is not allowed.

If you can wait it out a little, keep track of what she says and who she said it in front of, then go to the Manager over her - that may be the main Branch Manager, or Area Manager or something, but you have to have something documented before you do that - have everything on paper, including the names of people who witnessed what she said to you.

    Good Luck!

  3. Most of the times you can never win a fight against your boss, even when they are wrong. Reporting them to their manager is suicide...9/10 their boss will side with them. Think about it...they were the ones that hired them in the first place.

I advise you to start looking for a transfer to another store or to look for another job...

  4. If you really can, just quit because putting up with that is just going to make things worse. Find another place to work at.

  5. Document everything and take it above your area supervisors head without them knowing anything.  They are s******g you!  I get treated the same way.  You can call me anytime (419) 651 4239
