Question:

Trouble with turn signals (99 Protege ES)?

Hi, my 99 Protege ES recently started to have a problem with the turn signals: Sometimes they work fine, but other times they are silent with no blinkers nor flashers when the turn signal lever is switched on. I'm not so sure whether this is related or not: I also noticed that the emergency lights don't work either when the turn signals don't work. Since both left and right turn sginals fail at the same time, what could be cause of the problem? And how to diagnose/locate the problem?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Joe

  1. It sounds like the combination switch is bad and this is a very common problem for many vehicles, it goes bad just from wear and tear.

To check it you will need to remove the switch and inspect for continuity between the light switch terminals using an ohmmeter.

  2. In addition to what the first guy said, the flasher unit could be out.
