1. First change to a longboard.

Then make sure it is a foam Longboard.

A shortboard is for really advanced surfers.

        Here's a link for you: http://www.mahalo.com/How_to_Surf_for_Be...

    http://www.howtosurf.net/

      hope I helped!

  2. I learned to surf on a really long board and have to say it was really easy to balance on it. If you find it too hard on the shorter board (which I would have) you could always rent a cheap old board to learn and practice on for a day or two at least and then you should be fine. I looked around and found a video that should do the trick just fine here http://www.videojug.com/film/how-to-surf...

I will look a little more and if I find anything I will come back and post.

Surfing is great fun and great exercise. I no longer live by the ocean and I miss it a great deal! I grew up 2 blocks from the beach (So.CA)and after college lived 4-1/2 years in Hawaii also 2 blocks from the beach...so I have pretty much spent my life at the beach! Lots of luck...you will have soooo much fun! ;D

  3. longboard the same stability as a fish ? hahahaha, thats like comparing a Cadillac to a Porsche, sure they are both cars, but one handles just a wee bit different than the other. learn on a longboard , long, wide ,and stable. the learner ultimately controls the learning process, if it dont work for you switch to what does.

  4. Id suggest learning on a longer board if its possible because the bigger they are the easier it is to learn on.

However you could also try a learning on a Fish, either a twin fin or a quad. They basically have the same stability as a longboard but have more manuverability.

A good tip with learning to surf is enjoy every wipe out, enjoy every moment and never give up! Every surfer has gone through what you're going through. Enjoy it!

Let me no how you go!

  5. I would recommend a fun board (mini-longboard)

A board that is 2.5-3 inches thick in the middle

When your just starting out, a 7'3'' board would fit you best.

Do not rent a board for the day, because you are just wasting your money.... its going to take a few times going out with your board until you get the hang of it.

If you have a friend, with the right size board, you should try theirs..... (just to save a little money)

buying the right size board is the best bet though... trust me... once you get the hang of it, you will be wanting to go out there everyday.

P.S. don't get rid of that other board. once you become a good beginner surfer, you may want to move onto the shortboard, and that foam shortboard would be the best shortboard to learn on.

  6. hey i started surfing on a long foam board and i really liked it once i got better i went to a short hard board surfing of course will be a little diffucult in the begging but will get much better surfing on a short board isnt as balanced but i reccomend learning on a short board cuz if you learn on long board you will be to used to a steady board good luck and hang lose

  7. Ideally, you should have bought something closer to six foot or more to learn on. But it's really your weight and the buoyancy (ability of the foamie to float you) that counts. If you're in the 100 lbs., or lighter range, keep practicing on the board you have. Learning to surf isn't easy on any board. They all take practice. Since you're a newbie, start by riding in the white water a hundred times or more. That's equivalent to about a week of practice. If you still don't progress, put that board away for a while, and get a longer board.

  8. the bigger the board the easier it is.

if u can get a bigger one.

    i would recomend that

then work your way down sizes in soft boards then to hard boards.

it would make it wayyy easier

you can use the one you have but it will make it more difficult to start learning on.

    practise makes perfect. =]

  9. bigger board

  10. Tortillas Malas (Bad Tortillas),

Where do these people get there answers from? Obviously not research....because they don't have a clue.

You can learn just fine on the board that you have. I have been surfing for over 25 years...I learned on a 6' 3" thruster in 1983. Oh.... I am 6' 1" tall.

The only reason you or anyone would want to learn on a longboard or 'pig' is that it is easier. However, if you are up to the challenge, why not learn on the type of equipment that you want to shred on?

Nothing comes easy in life...learning to surf at a high level is no exception, and harder than most can even fathom or contemplate.

There is so much to learn about surfing: being a surfer, getting wet on a regular basis (5+ times per week) , and doing the things necessary to improve and refine your surfing skills and abilities.

Learn on the board that you have and save your money to get a board that is more suited for you after you have put in 6-8 months or 150 sessions, whichever comes first!!!!

Clean tubes and uncrowded conditions.... Peace....

  11. If I were you. I would start on a longboard. Longboards are alot easier to learn on because you have an easier time to stand on. They are also alot more stable and wider as well. At least for me. When I started out, I used a 9 ft. board and never looked back. Now I do a little short boarding, but rarely. All I can say is that its not really for me. I'm not really a trick kind of person, I prefer just cruisin' the waves and relaxin'.

In conclusion, I would go with a longboard. It is alot easier to learn on and more fun to surf on, but don't take my word. You can pick any board style you want, just remember to relax and have fun.

    Enjoy
