Troubleshooting Code E0

Our copier quit working and alternates between flashing "E0" and "00".  Our owner's manual gives only the following advice:  When "E" and a number is flashing on the copy number indicator turn the power switch off, disconnect the power plug, and contact your service representative.  What does "E0" mean and is it something we can fix ourselves?
