Troubleshooting Uniden cordless phone set, one works fine no sound in the other even tho the cradle reads it?

The phone set is DXI7286-2. These phones have been unplugged for over an hour in the past an according to the manual they should need to be reregistered to the main base; but we just plugged them right in and one of them still had a charge. The other was totally dead and has been on the charger long enough to have enough charge to turn it on. The first handset is working fine, the base is detecting it and its dialing out and receiving calls perfectly...the second handset however is being read by the satellite charger but when you try to press talk to make a call it will either flash "connecting" repeatedly and then "unavailable" or if it does connect there is no sound. There is no dial tone but we tried dialing our cell phone anyway just to see if it maybe could call out even though we couldnt hear the tone. It called out just fine but when my friend picked up the cell phone and talked into it I couldnt hear anything in the handset. It seems like it works fine just has no sound

try switching the batteries around between the extentions....I always s have trouble with batteries,, and it seems to work....then I know that I needed a new one!!!
