Question:

Troubleshooting central air conditioner?

Fan is going fine...breakers both on. However there's only a small poof of air coming from my vents and that air is pretty much room temperature. Could anyone give me some troubleshooting tips? I may very well need to call a repairman, but on the off chance it's something simple I'll kick myself to pay someone to flip a switch. Any troubleshooting advice appreciated as well as opinions on potentially more serious problems with it.

  1. maybe the rubber or air hole get loose from the right place u just open and  putt it back in the right place

  2. She's frosted or frozen up.Run the fan by itself for 30-45 minutes and there is a good chance she'll start cooling again when put back to cool. good luck.

EDIT: Make sure that you check your filter and the coil cleanliness when she thaws or it will freeze again if the problem is not resolved.Another reason for a freeze up is a shortage of refrigerant but check those things first because they are very common.

  3. Alwayson is sending the best advice so far in my opinion.I will add a few things that may help.Assuming you have a standard central a\c system

there are (2) major reasons for freeze up"hence low air volume". These are not the only reasons but the most common.(1)Low freon level, best solved by licensed tech.(2) Restricted air flow either on the a-coil "inside on air-handler or furnace" or outside on the condensing unit.Number 2 can be pretty simple to solve.Check the outside condensing unit for any air flow restrictions,on the sides and top of fan area. The fan pulls the air through the fins or coils if you smoke hold a cigarette next to the coils while unit is running if the smoke is pulled through quickly at all areas "top, bottom" the coils are probably ok. It never hurts to clean them periodically to improve performance and lifespan. The a-coil inside is a little trickier. The a-coil is the box looking unit that sits on top of furnace unit.If you are not a REAL DIY don't attempt internal cleaning of the a-coil.Over time dust, pet hair and such will build up inside this unit

and cause restricted airflow.Check that air filter every 3 months it makes a big difference.

As to future problems yes there can be some. If the a-coil has completely frozen over and you do not have a VERY clean drain line on the coil,a substantial amount of the unfrozen water can end up on your

heat exchanger or electrical circuitry. If you know what your looking at this can be diagnosed with a good flashlight. In real estate its location

    location,in hvac it airflow,airflow.

Hope this helps and good luck

  4. Have you checked your attic to see if anything got moved onto the ducts?  Maybe someone was up there and has "pinched" one of the ducts by moving something heavy against it or on top of it.  I would also just check the ducts in general up there for anything obvious.
