Troy Matteson grabs outright lead in the opening round of Deutsche Bank Championship: Part 2
Bradley pulled in an average round of three-under, 68, three shots away from the lead and will have to tread carefully in the coming rounds to stay in contention for the last two events ahead.
“It was a little more intense just because I want to play well in front of these guys, in front of my family,” Bradley said. “But I had a good round. I had such a good group today. It was very relaxing.”
Charl Schwartzel, reigning champion of the Masters, continued with his fine form, carding the opening round of five-under, 66, to remain in contention for the $10-million event at the end. Schwartzel pulled in six birdies, three on each nines, and dropped
just one shot to settle for joint second.
The South African missed the opening event, The Barclays, and would be only the third player to win the FedExCup Championship after missing the opening event, if in case he goes on to lift the lucrative title.
“I was sitting in South Africa in the sunshine and watching the guys struggle through the hurricane and all the things happening out here,” he said. “In that sense, it was maybe a good choice. But by missing an event, you put yourself back a little bit on
the back foot.”
Chez Reavie, playing in the tournament on medical exemption again shot an impressive opening round of four-under, 67, to defy his lingering knee injury. Reavie has missed 15 cuts in his 23 appearances this year, owning mostly to his injury vows and recently
went through a wide-open surgery on his knee.
He posted a strong finish at the Wyndham Championship last month, where he posted a joint ninth to bag $140,400. Reavie will be eager to pull another strong finish here at TPC Boston, in order to work up his way for a total of $673,983 on the Money List
to retain his PGA Tour card for the next season.
Nick Watney, one of the top ranking American players, carded a round of four-under, 67, to push for his bid to the summit. Watney has already won twice on the tour this year, at the World Golf Championship Cadillac Championship and at the AT&T National.
He has also remained on top of the FedExCup Money list for quite some time. He is now third on the Money List and will be hoping to make his move in the next rounds of the championship.
Top-70 players from the Deutsche Bank Championship will proceed to the next event of the FedExCup Playoff Championship, while only the 30 players qualifying from there onwards will proceed to the final leg of the championship, the Tour Championship presented
by Coca Cola, in Atlanta.
