  1. Your smaller 4 cylinder trucks.  Nissan Frontier or Toyota Tacoma's are good.  Yes, I know they are foreign, but......they are still good little trucks for the money!

  2. A car?

This strikes me as a stupid question.  What would be the best car for offroading?  Hmm?

  3. check out the electric trucks on Ebay. That range would be no problem for them and they use NO gas.

Just charge the batteries. (I use a solar array)

  5. Hi Brian,

I rank and review vehicles for US News. Your question is a good one - but it all really depends on what size truck you're looking to buy: compact, full size, sports utility, or heavy duty?

Unless you're a contractor, you're probably not looking to purchase a heavy duty truck - so let's stick to the more popular ones. These days, most trucks hoping to compete within a given class tend to have similar gas mileage. For instance, the 2007 Ford Ranger leads the compact pickup class with a city/highway fuel economy of 17/29 mpg. The least fuel efficient in that class, however, is the 2007 Dodge Dakota - with 16/22 mpg. As you can see, the difference in gas mileage isn't really that big of a deal. In general, the same can also be said for all other classes of truck as well. (Overall, compact pickups tend to have the best gas mileage for a number of reasons - their size/weight being one major factor).

If I were you, I'd first decide what class of truck your interested in buying - then, from there think about what factors (other than gas mileage) mean the most to you. For instance, safety, reliability, performance, good looks, and so on. After all, that's where these vehicles will differ the most.

Take for example that Ford Ranger I mentioned earlier. It has the best fuel economy in its class, but the Toyota Tacoma (which costs roughly the same) is generally regarded as an all-around better compact pickup. Moreover, its fuel economy is 16 city/ 28 highway - virtually the same as the Ranger.

Trucks are exciting vehicles - and there really aren't that many new lemons being built. So, if gas mileage is your only concern, you've got a wide array of rides to pick from. Good luck with your search!

  6. Ford Ranger, or Nissan Frontier
