True South Classic: Bud Cauley returns to the field of his first top-10 finish on the PGA Tour
Bud Cauley fired a bogey-free five-under par 67 in the opening round of the True South Classic, at the Annandale Golf Club, and tied for the eighth position on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
Cauley started off on the back nine and carded two consecutive birdies, starting from the 11th hole. Afterwards, he parred five holes in a row prior to adding another birdie to his scorecard on the 18th hole.
The front nine saw him make straight six pars before two consecutive birdies that came on the seventh and eighth hole.
Cauley looked happy with another good start in Madison, as the same venue saw him register the first ever top-10 finish of his career on the PGA Tour, after turning professional last year.
“I think this was my third tournament. The first shot, I played okay. To come here and play well and get in contention and finish in the top ten, which got me in next week was huge for me,” he said.
Cauley did not miss a single cut in his first four starts during the 2011 PGA Tour season, including a strong finish at the same event, then known as Viking Classic, where he tied for the fourth position.
He also took the third spot in 2011 Frys.com Open and earned $340,000 as prize money. At the end of the season, he was among the players who qualified for the full-time PGA Tour card without going through the qualifying school.
“It's been great. It's a lot of golf, a lot more than I'm used to, but it's the best job in the world” he said. “It's what I've always wanted to do. I've enjoyed it a lot and just looking to play a little bit better”.
His best finish of the current PGA Tour season came in the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard, where he tied for the fourth position.
Therefore, he is now preparing to make another strong run on day two to improve his track record on the tour.
Meanwhile, the defending champion Chris Kirk tied for the 14th position with a four-under par score on seven holes. The game was suspended due to bad weather conditions on Thursday evening.
