True South Classic: Steve Lowery starts well at his first PGA Tour start of the 2012 golf season
Steve Lowery fired a six-under par 66 in the first round of the True South Classic. He managed to take the share of the third position in the round that was suspended, on Thursday, July 19, 2012.
Lowery, who is a three-time PGA Tour winner, began his first round on the back nine at the Annandale Golf Club. He parred the opening six holes prior to picking up some pace from the seventh hole (No. 16), when he recorded the first birdie of his round.
Thereafter, he recorded a birdie to end the back nine, followed by another one to start the front nine. His only bogey of the day came on the par-four fourth hole.
Yet, the bogey did not shatter his confidence and he managed to score four-under over the final five holes with the help of two birdies and an amazing eagle.
He now stands two strokes behind the leader, Jason Bohn, who fired a bogey-free eight-under par 64.
It was overall a special day for Lowery at a venue where he recorded a victory in the same tournament in the year 2000. According to him, he always likes to play on Jack Nicklaus’ designed courses.
“I've got good memories here. I've played well here. I played well on Nicklaus designed courses,” he said. “I hit kind of a power fade, and this course sets up well for that. I drove in the fairways today and was able to get a lot of chances and made a few
putts”.
Lowery is currently playing his first PGA Tour event of the 2012 golf season, as he normally plays on the Champions Tour.
“I think the guys on the Champions Tour feel like they can still play. When you come back, you kind of have a little bit of a motivation to kind of play well with the younger guys. Obviously, you want to play good every week, but it's nice to do it here,”
he said.
J.J. Killeen, Ryuji Imada, Jason Gore and Willie Wood were the other four players who joined him on the leaderboard prior to the inclement weather that led to the suspension of the play. Luke Guthrie took the sole second place with a seven-under par 65.
