True South Classic set to begin at the Annandale Golf Club
While the golf fans are heading towards the Royal Lytham to watch their favourite golf stars contending for the British Open, another PGA Tour event is set to begin at the Annandale Golf Club — the True South Classic, from July 19, 2012.
Despite the fact that the event clashes with the third major event of the year, a huge crowd appears to be heading to the course to enjoy the game of golf, as well as many other activities.
According to the Tournament Director John Marovich, the activities have remained the same even though the name of the event has now changed.
There will still be the pro-am even as well as the junior pro-am prior to the official start of the tournament on Thursday.
"Though the name has changed, the activities continue," tournament director John Marovich said. "It's fun for the whole family, whether you're an avid golfer or not. We're trying to encourage folks to see what this great game is all about”.
Annandale native Guy Bowering has been volunteering for the event, formerly known as the Viking Classic, for the last 17 years.
He believes that it is not necessary for someone to have complete knowledge of the sport in order to enjoy. In fact, one can understand the true meaning of the game and competition when they have a look at it live on the course.
"There's a large percentage who don't play golf, but they like to come watch," he said. "Watching the action you will realize the thrill of the game and how competitive it is. It's very entertaining to watch".
Last year, the Mississippi State University conducted a study, which revealed that the tournament contributes around US$22 million to the local economy.
Therefore, it is considered a great success for the tournament organizers despite their weird schedule.
According to the estimates, around 50,000 people will visit the venue to watch and enjoy the game. "As Mississippians, we need to come out and support this," Bowering said.
The tournament officials have announced free entry for the Monday and Tuesday’s pro-am events. However, the spectators will have to pay $20 for each person from Wednesday onwards.
