True South Classic to take place at Annandale Golf Club
True South Classic has gone through different phases in history. This year’s event is being played on Annandale Golf Club in Madison, Mississippi. A tournament, whose history dates back to 1968, was initially played on Hattiesburg Country Club until 1993.
The tournament during its early editions was named Mongolia State Classic until 1985, and then from 1986 to 1998 it was named Deposit Guaranty Golf Classic.
However, again its name changed in 2006. It was known as Southern Farm Bureau Classic. Till 2011, it was named Viking Classic and now in 2012 this event will be played under the name of True South Classic.
This event was almost always played alongside a major so most of the big name players never featured in this event. The tournament was later included in the fall series, which is played after the PGA Tour has ended.
In Fall Series, generally, those players play who want to earn money and are bidding to retain their tour card for the next season.
Prior to 1994, this tournament was not even on the PGA Tour, its victories were never counted, only the money earned was counted. In 2010, the event was last held in the fall season and since then, it has been part of the regular PGA season.
As this tournament has maintained a low profile throughout its history, many famous names never played in it. However, the current world number one, Luke Donald has been a winner here back in 2002.
This year’s True South Classic does not feature any major players because the Open Championship is about to start in England. All the top ranked players will be eyeing the glory at the Royal Lytham Golf Course.
However, there is one notable inclusion, Mike Weir the 2003 Masters Champion, will be playing after shrugging off his elbow injury. His inclusion has added to the tournament’s appeal.
The Annandale Golf course has been designed by one of the legends of the game, Jack Nicklaus. The course is ranked 45 out 51 in terms of difficultly by the PGA. A total of 19 events have been hosted on this course so far.
